3 Phase Transformer

Your 3 Phase Transformer Source

An easy way to understand a 3 Phase Transformer is simply that it is a transformer with a 3 legged iron core, with each leg having it's own primary and secondaryThree Phase Transformer windings.   Three phase transformers are a popular and common place method for the transmission of electricity and the method most utilized by power/energy companies.  A 3 Phase Transformer is uniquely designed to receive incoming power from the power/energy companies which is typically sent out as 3 phase power.  A 3 phase transformer must have 3 windings, all in sequentially correct order, to transform the power to the proper level of voltage needed to maintain power polarity and phasing.

The design of a 3 Phase Transformer consists of three single phase transformers sharing a single core.  A 3 Phase Transformer is constructed by winding 3 single phase transformers on a single core.   A dielectric state is created when they are enclosed in dielectric oil which is a nonconductor of electricity.   This creates the  benefit of electrical insulation between the case and windings and also preventing moisture formation, while creating cooling properties.

A 3 Phase Transformer is able to be connected in four ways as follows:

  • Delta to Wye (most common for industrial and commercial applications).
  • Delta to Delta (industrial applications).
  • Wye to Delta (high voltage applications).
  • Wye to Wye (rarely used due to balancing and harmonics issues).
